A large, unique, labyrinthine Minoan structure has been discovered on Papoura Hilltop in Kastelli, Heracleion in Crete, during excavations for a new radar. The structure, dating back to the early to mid-2nd millennium BC, is circular, approximately 48 meters in diameter, and features eight concentric stone rings leading to a central circular building. It is believed to have been used for community or ceremonial purposes, possibly involving rituals and feasts.

This structure is the first of its kind to be discovered in Crete and provides valuable insights into Minoan architecture, community life, and ceremonial practices. Ongoing excavations are required to reveal more about the structure’s purpose and the extent of its use.

Τhe Culture Minister, Lina Mendoni, though initially praised the monument’s significance, highlighting its unique nature for Minoan archaeology, her stance shifted after just a few days, claiming that the monument can coexist with a modern radar system.

In the 9th of July, the Greek Central Archaeological Council (KAS) has approved the plan to install radar systems beside the monument triggering a wave of reactions from archaeologists and locals.

Religious group Thymeli demands the protection of the Minoan monument in Papoura Hill.

We specifically demand:

▪️the revocation of the KAS decision – no radar on Papoura Hill

▪️the completion of the excavation and investigation of the monument and surrounding area

▪️the development of the hill as a visitable archaeological site.
